EXPAT TAX GUIDE

German tax class 6: what expats should check

Steuerklasse VI commonly appears where salary is paid alongside another employment. It can involve high payroll withholding, but the final annual result must be calculated from the complete year.

Multiple employers can create a filing obligation

German employee-assessment rules include cases where employment income is received simultaneously from several employers. Tax class VI is therefore an important signal that the filing position should be checked.

Mandatory filing does not mean tax payment

A filing obligation and the final tax result are different questions. A year can require a return and still produce a refund if payroll withholding exceeded the final annual income tax.

Send all certificates for the year

Where several employers are involved, provide every Lohnsteuerbescheinigung for the year so the combined wages and withholding can be reviewed.
